Student Union members represent students in all decision-making bodies of the University of Tartu that affect student life, learning and teaching. Here is a quick overview of our main activities.
Students of a particular institute are represented at the institute council by elected Union members who make up the institute student council. An institute is a teaching and researching facility that governs curricula. Sometimes institutes comprise chairs and departments but from a student´s point of view, the most important thing to understand is that representatives who are elected in spring make their voice heard in the institute council. During those meetings, lecturers, Junior Research Fellows, teachers and assistants are (re-)elected and the institute budget is adopted (i.e. how and on what the institute spends its money).
The University of Tartu has four faculties and each faculty has a council that also includes student representatives. Those members of the Union make up the faculty student council. In faculty council sessions, matters or greater importance affecting several structural units are decided. During council meetings, Associate Professors and Research Fellows are elected, Professors´ and Research Professors´ (elected in the Senate) candidacy proposals are endorsed or disapproved.
The Student Parliament consists of Faculty Student Councils. UTSU’s Board reports on its activities to the Student Parliament.
There are five student representatives (student senators) in the UT Senate. The Senate is the highest academic decision-making body at the university. During Senate meetings, Professors are elected and important strategic decisions are made.
In their day-to-day work, student representatives are aided by the Student Union Office. The Office comprises the Board of the Union and recruited employees.
All representatives, the Board and the UT student body are monitored by the monitoring committee who makes sure Union activities are legally valid and financially sustainable.
The umbrella organisation of all Estonian Student Unions is the the Federation of Estonian Student Unions (FESU) which stands for the rights and interests of students at a national level. The Federation is in close contact with the Ministry of Education and Research as well as other parties to make sure students´ voices are heard.
